Dante's Inferno

Devin McCarthy
Dante's Inferno
Dante Alighieri
Belford, Clark & CO, publishers.
1885
I chose this book for one reason. When I was a sophomore in high school we took a trip to the Rodan museum in Philadelphia. And when you walk into the museum you find a sculpture of the gates of hell by Rodan. The gates depict the levels of hell that Alighieri describes in his book. So in deciding a book I said maybe I should become more curious about the subject.

Harry Potter

Name: Courtney Leigh Griffith
Item title: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Author: J.K. Rowling
Published by: Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic Inc.
Date: 9/10/2012

Note: So, I chose the first book of the Harry Potter series because as obsessed as I am with the movies, I have never read the books. I have just recently started gaining an interest in reading, so I thought I'd give the books a shot. I also visited the Harry Potter park at Universal Studios this past summer and it was awesome.

Musician on "Musicians On Music"

Name: CJ Eller

Title: Arcana: Musicians On Music

Author: John Zorn (ed.)

Publisher: Granary Books

Date: 2000

I've been a fan of John Zorn's music for quite a while. I admire his staggering productivity, his creative genius, and his integrity as a musician and as a businessman. When I saw that he had released a book, I knew it had to be a one of a kind product. What I didn't know was that there'd be a slew of musicians joining him.

The book is a collection of essays with topics as various as the musicians that have been chosen. Some articles range from approaches to scales on the guitar to how the musicians, not the industry, is killing music. What's great about this book is the very breadth of its ideas. At times the material does not seem applicable to your musicianship but in the end it will make you think critically about your own values: something every musician must do! Highly recommended read.

Haley Livingston's blog! :)

Name: Haley Livingston
Item Title: Nursing: Concepts of Practice
Author: Dorothea E. Orem
Publisher: Mosby- Year-Book Inc
Date: 1991

Hi everyone!

So the book I chose to use was called Nursing: Concepts of Practice by an author named Dorothea E. Orem and I knew from the second that I saw it on the Mount Saint Mary's catalog that it was the book for me. I can say this for several reasons, the most important being that I am currently a nursing major. I made a recent career choice switch toward the nursing direction and I hope to do beautifully in all my classes and succeed to be the best possible nurse I can be. But with any other job there is out there, there is always time to learn more about what you are studying, which I why I chose this book. It gave me a much better understanding of a nurse's life such as the hours they tend to work regularly depending on the area, how many different opportunities there are within the nursing field, and a normal schedule for a nurse each day. Even more specifically I have known what kind of nurse I have wanted to be which is actually pretty similar to psychiatrist, it is called a psychiatric nurse practitioner. The only differences I have seen between the two jobs through my research is that they have different college and graduate school requirements, slightly low salaries, and fewer patients. But other than that, most of the things needed in both jobs is the same. I still get to be a counselor for different patients and prescribe medicine to patients as well. In fact, I could not be more excited just thinking about all the wonderful things that could emerge out of it! This book again helped me to widen my eyes to see even more things about my future career path that I myself did not know was true. If any of you are considering becoming a nursing major, this trully is the book to look into. It will tell everything you need to know about the basics of nursing in order to make or break your decision. Nursing in general is a great field to go into because, unlike most jobs in this recession, you be almost guarnteed a job instantly. The reason for this is because, due to the new health care bill becoming a law, nurses are needed more then ever and there are simply not enough nurses to go around to support as many people as we need to in today's society. Again if you are at all considering looking into nursing I can promise you this book will not be a waste of your time! Have a great week!

Some Sassy Catholic Apologist

Name: Matthew Palardy
Title: Manalive
Author: G.K. Chesterton
Publisher: John Lane Company.
Date: 1912
Note: Red leather cover with gold bold lettering of "Manalive" at the top. I got G.K. Chestertons (a sassy English Catholic apologist in the 1920's) book because I love reading the many aphorisms and paradoxes he proposes. He's certainly mental floss, I have to read his apologetics chapters twice to make sure I actually understand them. Anyway, this is a semi-detective novel that reputedly contains many of Chesterton's philosophies. I look forward to reading it.

Tan, Deneise, Reynaud, AndOthers "Is Love Passion an Addictive Disorder?"

Name: Deneise Tan
Item Title: Is Love Passion an Addictive Disorder?
Author: Michel Reynaud, Lauren Karila, Lisa Blecha and Amine Benyamina
Publisher: The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Date: 2010
Note: When I requested for a scholarly journal, I was expecting a binder with different journals written by different authors. I was also expecting to search through all of the journals to find the one I requested for. Well instead of getting a binder I got this, a PDF attachment. I had to ask Mr. Carlson if I can use this because I was expecting a hard copy and I had a feeling he wanted hard copies for this assignment.
For my first attempt, I tried to request a scholarly journal from the library for this class, but I don't think it went through, so I requested for another. I requested for the "Is Love Passion an Addictive Disorder?" journal, however, it is not related to our class. This other journal is for another class, where my class discussed different types of addictions. Being curious, I googled "types of addictions" and this was one of the more interesting addictions. I wanted to now more about it so I decided to get this journal.
Name: Mary Andrews
Item Title: Psychedelic Optical and Visionary Art Since the 1960s
Author: David S. Rubin
Publisher: The MIT Press
Date: 2010
Note: I decided to make this assignment fun and get a book that I would actually look at. So I got this book with a lot of trippy pictures. It's also really interesting to read about all the cultural and artistic movements happening in the 60s.

Hopefully Jennifer Lawrence sees this

Name:Mike Daly
Item title: Mockingjay
 Author: Suzanne Collins
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Date: 2010
Note: I find it really weird that I actually want to sit down and read this book, one thing I never really do. Like many of you, I hope at-least, I went and saw The Hunger Games when the movie came out and really enjoyed. Pretty much the only reason I went was because I though Jennifer Lawrence (actress who plays Katniss Everdeen) was rather attractive. I ended up reading Catching Fire (2nd book in the series) in three days and since have been wanted to read the final book. So thanks to this assignment I actually went out and got it.

Waterman, Josephine and The Magicians

Name: Waterman, Josephine
Item Title: The Magicians
Author: Lev Grossman
Publisher: Viking Penguin
Date: 2009
Note: Like Harry Potter, but with psychological torment. The book has this cool plastic cover, probably laminated. I think that's what they do with all library books (maybe?), but hey, it twinkles in sunlight, so whatever. Hardcover, has a hand-drawn map on the inside with a stupid-looking dragon-noodle doodle next to Wormwood. Author's blurb features author's portrait-picture. Did you know Lev Grossman is bald? I can't tell if it's shaved or not. Ha ha, gross, man.

Whelan's Most Amazing Drug

Hello Classmates, it is I, Megan Whelan, and this is my beautiful portrait taken by my lovely roommate. Here I pose with my interlibrary loan book, and to add some spice, a bottle of Aspirin (well, Ibuprofen, but it is the same thing). Why a bottle of Aspirin you ask? Because the book I have chosen is:

"ASPIRIN- The Story of a Wonderful Drug" Written by Diarmuid Jefferys, and published by Bloomsburg in New York in 2004.

I have chosen this book because I am positive Dr. Carlson's assignments will give me headaches.

I'm just kidding.

The real reason I have chosen this book, is due to the Undergraduate Research I am conducting under the supervision of Dr. Patricia Kreke in the Science Department. During the spring semester course of Organic Chemistry, Organic students conduct a three step synthesis experiment, which we call the "Sequence Experiment." Over the past few years, Dr. Kreke, with the help of advanced Organic Chemistry students, have begun to "remodel" this experiment, so that it yields Aspirin, instead of the useless molecule Organic students are making now. I figured, if I am supposed to help make Aspirin, I should learn more about the drug and its history; and so I chose this book as my essay assignment.

Carlson, Mark and Waxman "Carmen Fantasy" arr. Vertommen (Example)

Name: Carlson, Mark
Item title: Carmen Fantasy
Author: Georges Bizet / arr. Luc Vertommen (Waxman)
Publisher: Bocchino Music
Date: 2010
Note: Possibly illegal transcription of the Waxman Carmen Fantasy done by Vertommen for Bocchion music originally for Jascha Heifetz, violin. This edition up a halfstep and marred by key signature errors should be a bit easier to play on an instrument pitched in B-flat (like euphonium) even though I've already learned to play it in the original key of E. Also note that the picture was done on the first take... and on a bad hair day. I'm trying to set low expectations for the photography.
